About the position The Department of Physics is seeking an Academic Advisor 2 to promote and support student retention and graduation across the university. Under administrative direction, the Academic Success Advisor provides comprehensive academic counseling to guide students in making timely progress toward degree completion. This role includes offering in-person and virtual support, developing tailored strategies to address individual student needs, and collaborating with faculty and staff to enhance academic success initiatives. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a student-focused approach to ensure academic and personal growth objectives are met efficiently. Responsibilities • Provides comprehensive individual and group academic advising in support of student success, retention, and timely degree completion. • Works collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and university partners to deliver holistic academic support and guidance. • Proactively monitors student academic progress and program effectiveness using degree progress tools, customer relationship management systems, analytics platforms, and other technology-based resources. • Apply evidence-based advising practices, student development theory, and retention-focused strategies to inform interventions and improve outcomes. • Identifies, addresses, and resolves student concerns, questions, or issues. • Collaborate with students to explore academic and co-curricular options including degree pathways, tutoring, counseling, career services, success coaching, research opportunities, internships, study abroad, and extracurricular engagement. • Provides counsel to support informed decision-making aligned with student goals, interests, and abilities. • Serves as a key contributor and subject-matter expert within the advising team. • Ensures ongoing student satisfaction with academic progress and advising services through follow-up, assessment of service effectiveness, and continuous improvement of advising practices. • Utilizes and adapts to emerging technologies and university systems including student information databases, CRM platforms, appointment systems, degree audit tools, and analytics software. • Provides feedback and insight on system functionality and process improvement to enhance student experience. • Acts as a college/department representative to current and prospective students, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders. • Participates in and presents at orientations, recruitment events, workshops, and outreach activities related to academic success initiatives. • Collaborates across academic units and student service areas to facilitate coordinated and comprehensive student support. • Maintains a clear understanding of departmental and university-wide priorities, policies, and processes and how they impact the student experience. • Coordinates academic success programs, projects, or initiatives within the department or college. This may include establishing timelines, goals, assessment plans, and budgets where applicable. • Leads or contributes to advising policy development, implementation, and evaluation. • Supports training and professional development of advising staff and contributes to team knowledge-sharing and continuous improvement efforts. • Recognizes and addresses complex or urgent issues, escalating or redirecting matters as appropriate. • Partners with leadership propose solutions and lead initiatives designed to improve student support and program effectiveness. • Prepares reports, proposals, documentation, and assessments based on analysis of data and program outcomes. • As required, serves as a course instructor or faculty resource and engages with internal and external stakeholders to advance student success efforts. • Performs other duties as assigned. Requirements • Bachelor’s degree • three (3) years or more previous experience in one or more of the following: advising, student recruitment/retention or related student services utilizing a proactive and innovative approach which results in demonstrated outcomes in retention, graduation, and academic planning • Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Nice-to-haves • Experience working in academic advising or higher education, working with undergraduate students enrolled in in-person and/or online degree programs. • Demonstrated knowledge of principles, practices, procedures and methods of evidence-based academic advising strategies. • Experience in using Microsoft Office applications. • Experience in using technology to facilitate advising (DARS, PeopleSoft, Salesforce, Zoom, etc.) • Experience providing presentations or workshops to students. • Demonstrated knowledge of ASU academic structure, organization, and practices. • Experience adapting quickly to new technology, practices, and policies. • Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills. • Demonstrated knowledge of academic programs, colleges, departments, and schools at ASU. • Demonstrated knowledge of conflict resolution • Evidence of attention to detail Apply tot his job
