About the position Have you wanted to advise and advocate for an organization that impacts the lives of hundreds of thousands of residents daily? The U.S. Census estimated that as of July 1, 2023, more than 744,000 people reside in El Paso County and you will be part of representing the most populous county in the State of Colorado as it delivers essential and critical services to its residents. As a Senior or Assistant County Attorney assigned as Sheriff's Legal Advisor, you will represent the El Paso County Sheriff's Office's ("EPSO") interests for the benefit and safety of the public we serve. You will work directly with the Sheriff and EPSO Command Staff and law enforcement officials to assist with subjects such as public safety, law enforcement, civil rights, use of force, operation of a jail, civil sales, and many other matters that arise in a county sheriff's office. You may also represent clients in litigation that could stem from decisions related to those subjects. Due to the public safety-oriented nature of this position and EPSO's needs, this assignment does not carry a remote work component. We are looking for someone who welcomes challenges, enjoys working on legal novel issues in a dynamic environment, and can work both independently and as part of a team. In this position you will develop meaningful and lasting relationships with your clients whose charge is to deliver critical public safety services. Responsibilities • Provides legal services, advice, and representation regarding the County's legal affairs. • Assumes and coordinates major specialized projects as assigned by the County Attorney. • Prepares, drafts, and develops a variety of legal documents, including pleadings, motions, briefs, memoranda, policies, contracts, resolutions, and agreements. • Appears before courts and administrative proceedings at the State and Federal level to represent the County's interests as required. • Represents the County in civil litigation and administrative hearings. • Performs liaison responsibilities related to managing, overseeing, and coordinating the development and implementation of major specialized projects. • Prepares and participates in the development of policies; trains various County staff in implementing policy. • Leads, plans, and coordinates the work of staff responsible for special legal projects. • Provides legal advice and support to Elected Officials, Boards, Commissions, and Committees. • Researches and provides written and verbal legal opinions on County transactional, local government, and litigation matters. • Is readily available for consultation with the County Attorney, County Attorney's Office staff, departmental representatives, and Elected or Appointed Officials. • Attends and participates in professional group meetings; stays abreast of trends and new innovations in county government and in other assigned areas of the law. • May manage trials including gathering, analyzing, and organizing evidence, conducting discovery, meeting court and rule-imposed time deadlines, interviewing, and preparing witnesses for deposition and trial preparation of pre-trial and post-trial pleadings, motions, briefs; conducts jury selection, presentation of opening and closing statements, the direct, cross examination and re-direct examination of witnesses, and preparation of all post-trial matters, including preparation of appellate level briefs. • Provides assistance to the County Attorney. • Performs other duties as required. Requirements • J.D. from an accredited law school required. • Admission to and a member in good standing with the Colorado Bar required within one year of employment; or authorized to practice law in Colorado pursuant to Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct 205.6. • Three years of experience as a practicing attorney. Benefits • Full Salary Range: $96,140.00 - 144,250.00 for Assistant County Attorney. • Hiring Range: $100,000.00 - $120,000.00 for Assistant County Attorney. • Full Salary Range: $119,190.00 - 178,770.00 for Senior County Attorney. • Hiring Range: $125,000.00 - $148,000.00 for Senior County Attorney.
